AAC Evaluation and Training Services

Located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, Communication Technology Resources, LLC (CTR) is owned and directed by Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP.  Communication Technology Resources, provides consultation, evaluation and therapy services to children with a wide range of disabilities who could benefit from the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems (AAC).  Adults with development disabilities may also be referred for evaluation services.

School Districts and other agencies may contract with CTR to provide AAC evaluations and device training.  Medical insurance is not accepted.  All AAC evaluations are conducted at the student’s school.  CTR serves students within Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex Counties.

Prior to scheduling an evaluation the school district or referring agency must complete the Pediatric Intake Form and the AAC Evaluation Contract. These forms, along with the required reports should be sent to the address to the right.  Once the paperwork is received by CTR, the specified contact person will be offered a date and time for the evaluation.

The student’s speech therapist and/or other relevant staff are required to participate in the evaluation process to ensure the best outcome possible.  Typically the AAC evaluation is completed within a 2-hour time frame.  The evaluation begins with a brief discussion of the student’s abilities and confirms the evaluation goals.  The student’s symbolic abilitis are then assessed to determine if a high or low tech system is considered to be the most appropriate AAC option.

When appropriate, students are accessed with a variety of AAC Apps and/or devices.  It is important to note that use of technolgy may not be considered appropriate for every student.  When a device is not indicated, intervention goals are provided to the speech therapist, teacher and family to help the child develop the requisite skills to effectively use an AAC system.

A report is prepared documenting th evaluation finding and detailing AAC device/App recommendations and goals.  The School District will typically receive the completed report within 2-weeks following the evaluation.

School districts and other agencies at the local, state and national level may also contract with CTR to provide workshops and consultations on a variety of AAC related topics including the Gateway to Language and Learning© App.
